While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant things from the area, and clean up any water or place a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
